World of James Herriot Museum & Kirkgate - THIRSK - North Yorkshire
Show filtersWorld of James Herriot Museum & Kirkgate, THIRSK, print from Original Watercolour by Richard E Bennett.
This view of the Veterinary Premises is taken from across Kirkgate, looking toward Thirsk, Market Square. The Red Door, is easily recognisable as the entrance to the most famous Veterinary Surgery in the World - that of James Herriot!
This painting is a later version of the painting commissioned for the opening of the World of James Herriot Museum, former home of the Veterinary Practice of Alf White. The Austin car of the Museum was used in filming the escapades of James Herriot and was parked as shown, on the day of the opening of the Museum. It was driven by Christopher Timothy, who played, James Herriot in the long running series. Christopher Timothy now narrates the current channel 5 "The Yorkshire Vet" series on Television.
Alf White, better known under the pen name of James Herriot, used to write books describing his varied work whilst running his Veterinary Practice in Thirsk. Adaptations into, films, and a lengthy TV series have brought visitors from around the world.
The Surgery premises were converted to the "World of James Herriot" Museum in 1999 when the Surgery moved to a new location.
Please visit the extensive Museum where you can also see the sets used for the TV series and get involved in the wonderful World of James Herriot.
